Why Now

We have reached a pivotal point in the national debate, and the choices for America have never been clearer. On almost every issue, the Democrat majority in Congress and the left are promoting “solutions” that involve more government ownership and control and push America closer to a welfare state. Instead of embracing every person’s creative potential, these policy prescriptions elevate the power of the state over the individual.
When carried to their logical conclusions, the policies pursed by the left lead to socialized medicine and more federal control of our schools. We have seen many recent examples of how Democrat leaders are committed to raising taxes and expanding federal government programs. If enacted, these policies will increase the burden of regulations and taxes on the American people, cost American jobs, and reduce America’s competitiveness around the world. In addition, policies advanced by the Democrat leadership would once again weaken our nation’s defenses and intelligence systems, while continuing to hold Americans hostage to foreign oil.
Americans need a clear alternative to the left’s socialist agenda. We need to put forth solutions grounded in freedom that help unleash the positive potential of every American citizen, while putting government in its proper place – serving the American people rather than sapping their economic and moral strength. In other words, we need a Reagan revolution for the 21st Century.
Speaking at Moscow State University nearly two decades ago, the late President Ronald Reagan counseled the students that “Democracy is less a system of government than it is a system to keep government limited, unintrusive: A system of constraints on power to keep politics and government secondary to the important things in life, the true sources of value found only in family and faith.” Today, when our government is poised to encroach on more and more areas and take an ever-increasing share of Americans’ tax dollars, we need a return to Reagan’s hopeful vision.
Today, we are announcing the creation of Reagan21, a bicameral group of members of the House and Senate who are here to answer the call from Americans who want a real choice – who want a government based on integrity, core principles, and most of all freedom.
Our goal is to build a coalition to bring new ideas to the debate that confront America’s challenges and turn them into opportunities. Again, we seek to ignite a Reagan Revolution for the 21st Century.
This is not a group that seeks to replace any other caucus, group or leadership team. We intend only to add to the effort. To bring another player to this great battle of ideas our nation needs and deserves.
